In response to Foxconn's legal prosecution against a reporter and an editor in the First Financial daily because of their reports on the working condition of i-pod subcontracting factory in Shenzhen, First Financial Daily issued an open letter condemning Foxconn.
In the public statement, the First Financial Daily stated:
1. they would support Wang You and Weng Bao in the trial as Wang You was just fulfilling his duty as reporter.
2. Hongfujin (Foxconn's factory in Mainland)'s decision to sue Weng Bao, Wang You's supervisor, has violated mainland legal practice. The Daily therefore demands the company to drop the case against Weng Bao.
3. they condemn Hongfujin company's act in freezing the properties and assets of Wang You and Weng Bao; demand the company to withdraw their acts and support the two staffs to pursue compensation via legal process.
4. Foxconn's act against individual reporters would enraged all media workers.
In fact, the prosecution against the reporters has already resulted in a series of chain reactions within internet media and blogsphere.
The Taiwan Journalist Association also condemned Honhai (Foxconn mother company in Taiwan) and claimed that they would support their fellow reporters in China (via coolloud.org.tw).
Today Sina News has a special page on the issue.
